Don't Mess with Texas Scholarship

Don't mess with Texas Scholarship
Do you know a Texas high school senior who loves Don't mess with Texas?
Encourage graduating seniors to enter the Don't mess with Texas Scholarship Contest. Student essays can show their Texas pride by describing actions they've  taken to stop litter and put trash where it belongs.
Sponsored by Forestar and presented in partnership with Keep Texas Beautiful, the Don't mess with Texas Scholarship recognizes the achievements of high school seniors who have taken leadership roles to prevent litter in their schools and/or communities to build awareness of the Don't mess with Texas initiative.
This year, prize awards have doubled. One $6,000 grand prize scholarship and two $2,000 scholarships will be awarded in May 2015.
Any high school senior currently attending public, private, or home school in Texas and planning to pursue a two- or four-year degree at an accredited Texas college or university next year may apply.
Both digital and mailed applications will be accepted and will be judged based on student essays detailing creative solutions to litter problems.
More than half a billion pieces of visible litter accumulate on Texas roadways each year, and Texans ages 16 to 34 are the most likely to litter. Essays give students a chance to show how their efforts raise awareness and motivate a new generation of Texans to stop litter and put trash where it belongs.
Need inspiration? Check out videos of the 2014 scholarship winners and their projects! Download a flyer to share or post at your school.

College Readiness Workshop

Ready, Set, Go!: College Readiness Workshop Saturday, November 15th, 2014

Ready, Set, Go! (RSG) is a college readiness workshop put on by the University of Texas Senate of College Councils, directed towards high school students and parents from the Austin area. Each fall, the Recruitment & Retention Committee hosts RSG in an effort to engage high school students interested in continuing their education by providing them with resources necessary for college preparation and valuable insight into the college experience. The workshop can accommodate up to 120 students, plus parents . The fall workshop typically focuses on juniors and seniors learning about the application process, although students from all grades are welcome. The workshop schedule includes: presentations by different academic services on campus, peer advising sessions facilitated by current UTstudents, a mock lecture given by a current faculty member, parent sessions to provide information regarding relevant matters, such as financial aid and housing cost, and an introduction to the collegiate experience.

On behalf of the Senate of College Councils, we would like to invite you to attend the fall Ready, Set, Go! College Readiness Workshop on Saturday, November 15th, 2014. It will take place from approximately 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. on the University of Texas at Austin campus.

Free breakfast and lunch will be provided to those in attendance. Detailed information will be sent out closer to the date of the actual event. If you have any questions, please contact utreadysetgo@gmail.com.
